Safety First: A Gift Giving Guide from ESFI
Know Where to Buy:
Buy electronics from reputable retailers, in-store or online, that stand behind their products and can provide help if something goes wrong.
Safety Certifications Matter:
Certifications form testing labs like CSA and UL mean the product has been tested to be safe. CE marks are not third-party safety certifications.
Register Your Products:
Register your electronics with the manufacturer to be kept up to safe on any issues or safety recalls to the product.
Check for Recalls:
Check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Website (www.CPSC.gov) to see if the products you are interested in purchasing, or that you own, have been recalled for safety issues.
Purchase the Right Accessories:
Make sure all spare parts and accessories are either from or approved by the main device’s manufacturer and are certified by a testing lab when possible.
Know How to Use and Charge Safely:
Always charge or power devices on a flat, dry surface. Keep electronics away from water and direct sunlight.
Be Aware of Battery Problems:
Signs of a battery problem are:
- Changes in battery color
- Sweet electrical burning smell from the battery
- Noises or leaking from the battery
- Changes in the battery or device shape
- Smoke coming from the battery
