According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than one million counterfeit electrical products have been recalled in recent years, including extension cords, power strips, batteries, and hair dryers. Every day, counterfeit electrical products are finding their way into our homes, businesses, and public institutions. These fraudulent items pose serious safety hazards, and if left undetected can cause deaths, injuries and substantial property loss in the home and the workplace. Addressing the rise of counterfeit electrical products has become a major priority throughout the electrical industry in recent years, and ESFI has actively participated in this initiative. To increase awareness of the growing threats to public safety and economic competitiveness posed by counterfeit electrical equipment, ESFI has launched Buyer Beware, a national public awareness campaign to educate the public about how to recognize dangerous and defective counterfeit electrical products and avoid purchasing them when shopping online or in traditional retail outlets. This campaign builds on the success of the ongoing industry anti-counterfeiting initiative and extends the reach of this important message to American consumers - the end-users of these defective counterfeit electrical products - who may unknowingly be in imminent danger. ESFI’s Buyer Beware anti-counterfeiting campaign features a number of educational materials, including a campaign toolkit designed to help organizations and individuals plan awareness activities in their local communities. The contents of this toolkit can be downloaded and at no cost from ESFI’s campaign Web page, and can be customized to meet the needs of your organization.
